Private tutor in New Orleans, LA

Education

I graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 2012 with a major in history and a minor in African studies. Over my four years as an undergraduate, I earned a 3.89 GPA, which earned me summa cum laude honors upon graduation. I was also elected to the Phi Beta Kappa national honor society for the liberal arts and sciences as a result of my academic record.

Experience

I am an experienced, state-license public educator with an exceptional academic record. I have spent the past three years teaching all subjects and planning English/Language Arts for elementary students in New Orleans. As a result, I know precisely what skills and strategies young learners need to excel in math, reading (fluency and comprehension), writing, and all other content areas. However, my instructional skills are not limited to helping young learners alone. As you can see from both my undergraduate record above and my test scores below, I have experienced great success in a variety of academic subjects such as history, writing, and standardized tests. In combination with my formal teaching skills, this success allows me to push students to reach their goals in all of my listed tutoring subjects. Finally, I tutor because I am passionate about educating young people. While I have previously educated students in a formal classroom setting, I have learned that the most effective learning and confidence-building occurs in one-on-one or small group settings, with student-targeted instruction. By teaching in these more individualized contexts, teachers are able to connect more fully with students' personal, academic, and instructional needs. Test scores: SAT: 740 Reading, 730 Math, 780 Writing (2250 Combined) GRE: 166 Verbal, 163 Quantitative, 5.5 Writing APs: U.S. History (5), European History (5), Biology (5), Calculus AB (5), English Literature (4), Chemistry (4), U.S. Government (4), Spanish (4), Calculus BC (3)

Hobbies

I was born and raised in Southern California, but have spent the past three-plus years living in New Orleans and working with children and youths here. As a result, I am in tune with trends and developments both locally and on a broader level. I am a passionate sports fan, with knowledge of football, basketball, and baseball at both the college and professional levels. My sports knowledge and enthusiasm has helped to build connections and engagement with reluctant students in the past. I also am a big music fan, following rock, hip-hop, and current pop music trends. On top of relationship-building, music can be helpful in instruction as a means of analyzing writing (structure, tone, theme) or as a memorization tool similar to the use of mnemonic devices.
