Daniel S.
Private tutor in New Orleans, LA
Education
2013 graduate of Whitman College—Anthropology major, Spanish minor
Experience
Spanish qualifications: —Tutored both high school and college students in New York City in Spanish before making the move to New Orleans —Internship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in an outreach program with Mexican immigrants. I spoke Spanish several hours a day both over the phone and in person —Worked as a volunteer translator for The Advocates for Human Rights translating documents for asylum seekers —Lived in Ecuador for four months, Guatemala for two months Teaching experience: -Tutored college students in several subjects including Spanish -Taught high school and college students video and audio editing software, an illogical system at least as frustrating as learning a language -Have held two camp counselor positions I personally struggled with certain subjects in high school as I tend to learn in a different way than most students, and it wasn't until college, when I had more freedom and time to tackle subjects in my own way, that I realized I had a natural ability with language. I empathize with any student who feels confused and overwhelmed by learning Spanish, and I believe tutors can make a huge difference by not only additional exposure and practice with the language, but through new ways of thinking about the material.
