EducationI am a recent graduate from FSU with a degree in physics, and a minor in math. While at FSU I took some courses regarding teaching techniques, but most of my time was focused on physics and math.
ExperienceI have been tutoring for the past four and a half years. I moved to New Orleans from Tallahassee about a year ago, and I have been working for a nonprofit along with being a freelance tutor.
I have seen success as a tutor , because I believe that the best way to learn math or physics is not through memorization, but rather understanding the content on a conceptual level. What this means is that the student does not have anything to remember (and forget after the test is over), because the theory becomes like riding a bike. It is one thing to know the pythagorean theorem by hear, but how many people understand it? These are the kinds of questions I ask of my students. You are in calculus, but you forgot your trig. Why? I believe it is because you never were taught to understand trig, but rather memorize a bunch of angles.
Lastly, the most important part of my tutoring philosophy is actually something I play no part in. I insist that all of my students practice, practice, practice. It is one thing for me to show you how the theory works, but can you lift the mathematical weight? Your brain is a muscle, and you must exercise it. I am here to show you how to do the problems, but you are the one who must your pencil down and solve them. I can always tell when my students aren't practicing, and you better believe I call them out on it!
HobbiesI am also a semi-professional musician. I have been playing delta blues guitar ever since I entered college. When I lived in Tallahassee I used to play many of the bars and venues around town with my band, but never anything too serious. I always loved how I could relate mathematics to music.
